CREW New Mexico 2020 President
If I told you that I was asked for my President’s farewell message, sat down, and 15 minutes later I was done, I would be lying to you. This has been one of the hardest letters I have ever had to write. I started and stopped this letter about a dozen times and every time not sure I was saying or what needed to be said.
This year we were faced with unimaginable challenges. No one could have seen 2020 as the year that changed everything. We have members who welcomed new additions to their families, as well as others who had the biggest year of their career and are succeeding and thriving in ways they never could have imagined. However, other members have lost jobs, loved ones and hope. How can I address both in one letter?
I think back to every time there was a struggle, every time there was a moment of weakness in our organization and the ways we have rallied together to celebrate and support each other. CREW NM has shown its resilience time and time again. We are here to celebrate when our members succeed, and bare the weight when one of our own can no longer carry the burden. We support, encourage, empower each other in ways that no organization does. We are stronger together.
This year we saw incredible things come from our membership. Justine Deshayes and Gabriela Marques stepped into leadership on a global stage with their support of CREW Network through the Audit Committee and the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task force, respectfully. CREW Brew was introduced, and we learned, among other things, how to lead and negotiate more effectively. We supported two local non-profits with our holiday giving, Locker505 and The Storehouse. We launched our UCREW and CREW Careers programs and are working with the state’s DECA leadership to put our program in High Schools statewide. Bobbi Kay Nelson was told this would be a 2-year venture, at least, and she managed to get it up and running in one school year….during a pandemic. If that does not speak to the heart of this organization, I don’t know what does!
The resilience that this organization has shown time and time again is a true testament to the strength of its members. Through 2020, we lead with grace, faith, hope, and healing. We came together in times of unimaginable heartache and in joyful celebration.
This year was not like any other year, and hopefully we will not have a year like this again, but if we do, I know CREW New Mexico can rally together and be the organization that truly has each other’s back.
I am honored to have led in 2020 and I am so excited to see where Alex Pulliam takes us next year. She is brave, brilliant, and has a heart unlike anything I have ever seen. She is a champion of people and fights for everyone’s highest good. I can think of no better leader to take us through this next phase. It is easy to lead when you don’t know what you are getting yourself into, it is quite another to step in mid-stream and find a way out.
Until we can be together again, stay safe and stay well.
Wishing you a prosperous 2021!
